The story of a crazy dream
In 1973, Jurgen Spaethe purchased virgin land in the Provence Alpes Côtes d’Azur region in the South of France.
He built the vineyard from scratch over weekends, on the side of his Monday to Friday job.
He taught himself to make wine with the help of three books which he still swears by to this day; the handbooks of oenology by Ribereau and Gayon.
He also received advice from a neighbouring vineyard, the renowned ‘Domaine Ott’, to whom he sold his first few harvests whilst the winery was still under construction.
Our focus has always been on quality over quantity.
We harvest manually using small 40kg containers to preserve the quality of the grapes.
The fermentation tanks are solely gravity fed, allowing for natural maceration and fermentation to occur.
Our yearly production is typically between 15,000 and 20,000 bottles.
Our wine is natural and vegan, with sulfite levels kept to a minimum (never more than 21 mg/L).
The Domaine is at an altitude of 500m, located in the Var region of Provence, with deep clay, argile and silicon soils.
This unique landscape in the region is perfect for slow ripening of grapes, which are hand-picked late in the season due to the warm days and cool nights.
Our Grape Varieties
Our varieties comprise of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Grenache for the Reds and Rosé, and Rolle (Vermentino Bianco) and Sémillon for the Whites.
In addition to its fruity and elegant Rosés and Whites, Matourne has made its reputation with its powerful Reds that age well over 5 to 10 years.
The production consists predominantly of Red (80%) followed by Rosé and White (10% each).
